RICHMOND, Va. (InvestigateTV) — A group of musicians is using their passion for music to support children who need specialized medical care.

The Sauerkraut German Band, a group of Shriners in Virginia, performs to raise money for the Shriners Hospital for Children Transportation Fund. The fund helps transport children to Shriners hospitals for treatment.

“What we do is we support the children’s hospital transportation fund. So we take the children that need help, and we drive them all over to whatever hospital they have to go to,” said Chris Frohne, a trombonist with the band.

The hospital offers free care for kids and their families. There are over 20 Shriners hospitals nationwide, where children are treated for orthopedic and burn conditions at no cost to families.

John Stenstrom, the 86-year-old band director, has played the tuba for 43 years. He joined the Acca Temple Shrine in 1982.

Stenstrom was introduced to music at a young age by his mother, who taught music. He did not start playing until high school.

“Unfortunately, my willpower beat hers. But, I finally got started with it, in high school,” Stenstrom said.

He took time off from the brass instrument while serving in the U.S. Air Force. When he returned home and picked up the tuba, it was like he never missed a day.

“I especially love the tuba because it’s a lot like when you play the tuba, that sound is inside you. It resonates. It just feels good,” Stenstrom said.

To date, the Sauerkraut German Band has raised $40,000 for the Shriners Hospital for Children Foundation.

Stenstrom said his commitment to the band gives him a sense of purpose.

“I like to belong, I like to be helpful, and make a difference,” Stenstrom said.
